'Another case of harking back, this time to the coinage of Alfred, is provided by a unique halfpenny (type f, pl.25, no.394), from the same (Chester 1950) hoard which has as obverse type a crowned head and as reverse type the London monogram familiar from Alfred's coinage. There is no inner circle on the obverse, and the legend, which begins at 8 o'clock, is curiously broken at 12 o'clock by what would normally be an initial cross:
