SF pale blue shade, small to large margins, tied by red Maltese Cross cancellation to entire letter from New York, dated 1 May 1840 (the first day of issue for the 1d. Black and Two Pence blue, although not officially used until 6 May) with an additional note added before posting on 7 May. Forwarded by Inman's Shipping line to Port Glasgow where it was stamped by the Glasgow receiver on 18 June 1840 and forwarded to Antrim, Ireland. Dated markings of Glasgow, Belfast and Lurgan on reverse; fine. A highly important rarity. Photo

The only recorded authentic example of a cover from the United States, with an 1840 2d. blue later affixed, and cancelled to pay the British Postage.
