En médaille strikings of 1839 Proof Shillings have been identified by Joseph Payne, Assistant Curator, Royal Mint Museum of being the likely products of Official Mint restrikings in the 1860s. This is evidenced within the Museum's own collection of 1839 Proof Half-Sovereigns, where the standard coin alignment axis is present on a known 1839 striking, whereas two other specimens bearing the same date, but recorded as being struck at a later time are orientated on medal alignment.
