East London Art Exhibition Photographic Competition copper Prize medal, 1897, awarded to W. A. J. Hensler, class III, no. 102, 25.77g, 39mm., light bruising to rim and occasional carbon spotting to surfaces, otherwise extremely fine, the hand-etching neatly rendered

William Alfred Isaac Hensler (1844-1922), was a 'Jeweller and Fancy goods' merchant by trade, but turned his hand to photography at the end of the 19th Century. Submitting examples of his work at Photographic competitions around the British Isles, his success led to his exhibiting through the Royal Photographic Society in the first decades of the 20th Century. He came to the attention of Reverend F. C. Lambert, who documented William and his work in a feature length article in his 'Practical Photographer' series (cf. Vol. 27, December 1908).
