William Phillips served in France from 1 May 1915. The Regiment raised 22 Battalions for service in the Great War, 17 of which served overseas; during the Battle of the Somme, eight Battalions went 'over the top' on the first day, suffering huge casualties. In total, the Regiment lost 8,814 officers and men killed in action during the war; William was also entitled to a Silver War Badge.
