Auction: 17047 - The Official Honours and Related Film Awards Bestowed upon Sir Christopher Lee, C.B.E., C. St. J. (1922-2015)
Lot: 20
'The World Awards were founded in 2000. I was included in their third annual muster, and the bonus was a pleasant weekend in Vienna. Perhaps the most enjoyable part is the informal restaurant dinner on the eve of the ceremony. There you are at table with a most catholic range of participants - painters, writers, directors, scientists, wherever the wheel of fortune stops. The Man of The Year in our group was a middle-aged German teacher who has saved many lives at his school in Erfurt when he seized a crazy gunman who had already shot sixteen people.
We also had Mikhail Gorbachev, who next day at the gala in the vast Hapsburg room of the royal palace always presents the statuary, looking you straight in the eye, and it was the unembroidered truth to say there could be no greater honour than to receive it from a man who rescued the twentieth century from the Cold War. So that was an easy speech to make. Not quite so simple was carrying off the trophy, which weighs eight kilos. When the Pope received his he very wisely made no effort to pick it up.'
