Given the incumbency of Sir John Yorke as Under Treasurer, and then Master of the Tower Mint at the time of Edward VI's 'Crown Gold' issue, it is assumed that the 'y' mintmark refers to him. The tun mintmark was also adopted for this issue, but is a far more frequent survivor among the known examples of this attractive coinage.
