Edward VI (1547-53), fine Sovereign, 'Crown Gold' third coinage, 11.22g, m.m. y, half-length image of crowned boy king right, holding orb and sword, rev. royal coat-of-arms with lion and griffin, er in garnished scroll below (Schneider 690; S.2450), a striking piece with crisp portrait and legend detail framed by a pleasing underlying reddish-pink hue, near very fine, rare

notes
Given the incumbency of Sir John Yorke as Under Treasurer, and then Master of the Tower Mint at the time of Edward VI's 'Crown Gold' issue, it is assumed that the 'y' mintmark refers to him. The tun mintmark was also adopted for this issue, but is a far more frequent survivor among the known examples of this attractive coinage.
