Because private ships did not maintain regular schedules, unless the ship is identified on the cover it is very difficult to determine what vessel carried a particular letter. The Bermuda Royal Gazette recorded the appropriate shipping news often permitting the ship's identification

1866 (29 Aug.) mourning envelope from Philadelphia via forwarding agents Middleton & Co., New York who sent it to Bermuda on the Eliza Barss, bearing U.S. 3c. pink with cork cancellation and alongside Philadelphia datestamp, marked "2d" in blue crayon to signify 2d. due to Bermuda under a new Ship Letter Convention of 25 October 1865, Philadelphia Station target duplex (29.8) on reverse; a few minor edge faults though a difficult to find rate cover. Note: On 25 October 1865, a new Convention between the United States and Bermuda came into effect. The rate became 2d. for private ship closed mail to the port-of-entry. A 2d. packet rate between the United States and Bermuda was also in force after 1876
