Because private ships did not maintain regular schedules, unless the ship is identified on the cover it is very difficult to determine what vessel carried a particular letter. The Bermuda Royal Gazette
recorded the appropriate shipping news often permitting the ship's identification
Ship Letters
1852 (22 Jan.) entire letter per "Bark Eliza Barss" via New York to New Haven, Connecticut and showing fine "new york/ship/7 cts" datestamp (2c. ship rate + 5c. internal postage). A very early cover carried on the Eliza Barss, that was registered in 1852, and accompanied by an 1867 Bill of Lading for a trip from New York to Bermuda
