Bermuda
1871 group of documents relating to the Opening of the Causeway connecting St. George's Island with the Mainland, from the papers of Lieut. Albert Hime, Royal Engineers, Executive Engineer and Officer in Charge of the project. Includes the printed Proclamation, the Programme of events and arrangements on the day, Trinity Church concert programme; Hime's autograph draft letter to the Governor announcing the completion of the Causeway "ready to be opened for public traffic" describing the technical aspects of the project, and the acknowledgement from Downing Street; letter to Hime initialled by Governor Lefroy congratulating him "on having associated your name inseparably with the social history of Bermuda"; extract from General orders signed by the Fort Adjutant on the "excellent arrangements … by which the largest public assemblage ever witnessed in Bermuda was regulated"; copy letter from Governor Lefroy to the Earl of Kimberley, Secretary of State for Colonies, reporting on proceedings and the Causeway project; official copy letter from Horse Guards London to the Governor from HRH the Duke of Cambridge, with Hime's marginal notations. With two further letters to Hime, one from the Receiver General's Office, Hamilton congratulating him, and an extract from the Bermuda Government Gazette awarding Hime a testimonial of £100 "to purchase a Service of Plate" suitably engraved from the Legislature of Bermuda.
