Victor Hugo
An eight word quotation written on a slip of paper, Donnez riches, l'aumône est soeur de la prière", which translates as, let the rich people give alms to the poor, for charity is the sister of prayer, and is signed at foot, "Victor Hugo". This quotation is written in the Alexandrian metre (ie 12 sylables) which was often used by Hugo. Written on a slip of paper with traces of former mounting on reverse. Victor Marie Hugo (1802 – 1885) was a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest and best-known French writers. Outside France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables, 1862, and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, 1831. In France, Hugo is known primarily for his poetry collections, such as Les Contemplations (The Contemplations) and La Légende des siècles (The Legend of the Ages).
