Autographs
Edward, Prince of Wales
1915 (21 June) Army Signals message from No.I Park (near Bethune) where he writes, "Issue 200 Mills and 150 TF hand grenades to both 2nd and 47th Divs." and is signed at foot "Edward", the telegram with a fine strike of Army Telegraphs "ACO" datestamp; also two picture post cards of the prince in military uniform. His request to take part in the fighting was refused by the Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, for fear of the effect on British morale that his capture or death might have, the prince was eventually allowed to serve on the Western Front. In November 1914, he was appointed to the staff of Field Marshal Sir John French at the British Expeditionary Force's General Headquarters in France. His role there remained unclear and he felt under-used. He was most effective performing his regular royal duties of visits and meeting guests, but this was the opposite of what he really wanted to do.
