Exchequer Receipts
1791 two military Exchequer receipts, the first dated (3 November) for £139.16.7¼ as part of a much larger order payable to the Bank of England for Service of his Majefty's Guards, Garrifons, and Land Forces. The second dated (16 November) for £5000 payable to the Bank of England, for the Services of the Navy and Victualling thereof. Both made out to Lord Thurlow and both signed "A. Newland"
Lord Thurlow was appointed as Lord Chancellor in 1778
Abraham Newland (1730 (c.) – 1807) was the chief cashier at the Bank of England from 1782 to 1807. The expression "an Abraham Newland" came to mean a bank note, because without his signature no Bank of England note was genuine
