Elizabethan Grant of Arms
1577 (27 June) illustrated Grant of Arms on vellum for John Connocke of Lescarde, in the countie of Cornwaell. The arms are, "silver a Fesse Danse bettwen three Egletts displaied Gules ... uppon the heaulme oute off a crowne a deme Griffon Golde Mantled Gules doubled Silver as more plainlei depicted in the Margemtle". Signed by Robert Cooke and bears the Clarenceaux's seal in excellent condition. The silver colour of the crest has become tarnished, otherwise remarkably fresh. A rare and very early document. Photo
John Connock (bef.1512-81/2), of Liskeard, he was a tanner, who owned the manor of Hagland as well as a town house at Moncton’s Corner, Liskeard. ‘A common quarreller, railer and perturber’, he received a grant of arms in March 1577, died ‘very aged’ during his fourth term as mayor of Liskeard.
