St.John of Jerusalem, General Loan, 1823, unissued £100 bond, very large format, black. The loan was intended to finance and aid the Greek War of Independence by raising an army of demobilised British soldiers. Various islands, when captured, were to be transferred to the Order by the rebels. News of the intended loan leaked to the press and the French Government withdrew its backing and the bankers refused the loan. This is the only certificate known, possibly offered as a sample prior to issue. VF and extremely rare [R12]
