Auction: 17016 - Bonds and Share Certificates of the World
Lot: 234
Japan: City of Kioto, 5% External Loan, 1909, unissued bond for 500 francs, large format piece with vignettes of various Japanese buildings including the Kamigano Shrine, at the base the Lake Biwa Canal inclined plane, not numbered or signed, blue, with coupons. Kioto was the Imperial capital until the Emperor moved it to Tokyo in 1869. The city declined until measures were made to regenerate it in 1889. The Lake Biwa Canal was built in 1890 which also generated hydro-electric power for the city's tram system. Two folds otherwise AEF and rare [R11*]. We sold a similar example in 2015 but that one still had its counterfoil and was also hole cancelled which this is not.
