Henry VIII (1509-47), first coinage, Penny, Durham under Bishop Wolsey, 0.73g, m.m. spur rowel, henric di gra rex agl, saltire stops, king on throne holding orb and lis-topped sceptre, lis on pillars, rev. civi tas dvr ram, saltire stops, shield on long cross fourchée, d w beside shield, hat below (N.1778; S.2333; Stewartby p.449 and pl.31/561 this coin), very fine, extremely rare in this condition, most of the eight examples known to this cataloguer being either double struck, pierced and/or chipped, or unavailable to collectors
