Winfred Darwall arrived France as a Private in the 1/5th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade) on 4 November 1914. The Battalion first went into action in the Ploegsteert Wood sector at the end of the month and, by Christams Day, had suffered casualties of 11 killed and 26 wounded; on that date fairy lights were observed in the German trenches.
Darwall was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 1/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment on 22 September 1915, which unit suffered heavy casualties on the Somme in the following year; confirmation for his Croix de Guerre and 'mention' remain outstanding.
