(x) East and West Africa 1887-1900 , one clasp, Benin 1897 (P. West, A.B. H.M.S. Theseus.), edge knocks, re-affixed and defective suspension claw, fine

The clasp 'Benin 1897', was announced in the London Gazette on 25.5.1897. H.M.S. Theseus was an Edgar-class protected cruiser of 7350 tonnes, with a complement of 544 men, built by Thames Ironworks and Shipping Company and launched in 1892. Able Seaman P. West, service number 168127, is noted as Part of Flying Column, and one of 553 men entitled to clasp 'Benin 1897.' Interestingly, Private C. Mill, Ply 1962, is recorded as having 'Died Sunstroke -Discharged Dead Case No. 78/1897, medal sent to widow', aboard the Theseus.
