Italy, Kingdom, Battle of Cape Spartivento Medal 1940, bronze, good very fine
The Battle of Cape Spartivento was contested on 27 November 1940 between the Royal Navy and the Italian Regia Marina. The engagement opened with the Italian destroyer Lanciere being hit by a broadside from H.M.S. Manchester, H.M.S. Berwick was then hit by a single 8-inch shell, which knocked out her "Y" turret, killed seven men, wounded nine others and ignited a fire that took an hour to subdue. The tables turned in favour of the British when the battlecruiser H.M.S. Renown closed the distance on the Italian cruisers, and straddled Trieste with two salvos.
