Bengal Presidency Rifle Association Prize Medal, 55mm, by Pinches, London, silver, the reverse engraved 'Championship 1905. Capt. L. G. Dobbin', good very fine, in case of issue

Leonard George William Dobbin was born in March 1871 and completed his education at the Military College, Oxford. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Northamptonshire Regiment in May 1891, he was advanced to Lieutenant in November 1893 and first witnessed active service on the North-West Frontier with the Tirah Field Force 1897-98 (Medal & 2 clasps). He subsequently joined the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, where he was present in operations in the Transvaal (Queen's Medal & 2 clasps) and gained advancement to Captain in March 1902. Having then served in India and as Adjutant to the 3rd Battalion, he was advanced to Major in November 1912.

Dobbin served with distinction in the early stages of Great War. Arriving in France with the 1st Battalion in August 1914, he was wounded in the battle of the Aisne in the following month, but rejoined the Battalion at the year's end, when he took command in the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Having been knocked out by shellfire on Auber's Ridge in May 1915, he was invalided home in July and relinquished his command in December. He was awarded the D.S.O. (London Gazette 14 January 1916, refers).
