Bertie Usmar was appointed a Gunner, R.N., in October 1910, shortly after receiving his Royal Victorian Medal for services as a Petty Officer 1st Class in Excellent's contingent for the funeral of King Edward VII; his earlier participation as a Bluejacket in the relief of Pekin operations is confirmed on the published roll.
On the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914, he was serving in the cruiser H.M.S. Suffolk, and he remained similarly employed until removing to the destroyer Pylades in December 1916: thus extended service in the Atlantic in search of German raiders. Removing to the destroyer Wakeful in November 1917, he was likewise employed at the war's end and was present at the surrender of the German Fleet.
Post-war he was appointed Commissioned Gunner in October 1920 and was placed on the Retired List as a Lieutenant-Commander in April 1926; sold with copied research.
