British Empire Medal (Military), E.II.R. (24118966 S. Sgt. A. Ryan, 4/7 R.D.G.), officially engraved naming on pre-prepared ground, good very fine

B.E.M. London Gazette 31 December 1983.

Alan Ryan was also a recipient of a G.O.C's Commendation, the background to which distinction is recounted in the pages of The 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards Regimental Magazine:

'On the afternoon of 8 June [1982], Sergeant Ryan, who was windsurfing on the Havel in preparation for the Rhine Army Championships, noticed that the wife of a British serviceman had got into difficulties some distance from the shore. He swam to her rescue and, helped by an Irish Ranger Lance-Corporal, carried her to the beach. By this time the woman was unconscious but mouth to mouth resuscitation and prompt action by Sergeant Ryan saved her life. For his exemplary action Sergeant Ryan received the G.O.C's Commendation.'
