He was latterly employed as a Colour-Sergeant and Drill Instructor in the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion and was discharged at Perth in August 1902, aged 42 years.
Having in the interim found work as a School Board Officer, he re-enlisted in his old regiment in Edinburgh in September 1914, aged 54 years, and was quickly re-appointed Colour-Sergeant. He subsequently served on the Home Establishment and was discharged on account of age from the 4th (Reserve) Battalion in November 1917.
McKenzie was awarded his M.S.M. in AO 205 of 1929, shortly before his 70th birthday; sold with copied research.
