William Laughton was born at Chesterfield, Derbyshire in 1887.
He first arrived in France as a Corporal attached to H.Q. Company of the 1/6th Battalion, Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, on 28 February 1915, and saw action in the Kemmel sector.
At the time of winning his first M.M., however, he was serving as Lance-Sergeant in the 2/6th Battalion: this was likely an award for the German Spring Offensive, when in late March alone the Battalion suffered losses of 130 killed.
With the subsequent disbandment of 2/6th Battalion in July 1918, Laughton transferred to the 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, and it was in this capacity that he won his second M.M. during the final weeks of the war. He had, meanwhile, added the T.F.E.M. to his accolades as a member of the 5th Battalion (AO 250 of 1 August 1917, refers).
Demobilised in early 1919, he re-attested for the Colours in May 1920, aged 33 years, but he was discharged in the following year. He died at Unstone, Derbyshire in 1967; sold with a file of copied research.
