(x) Norfolk Yeomanry

Three: 2nd Lieutenant G. A. Shelley, Royal Air Force, late 1/1st Norfolk Yeomanry

1914-15 Star (1722 Pte. G. Shelley, Norf. Yeo.); British War and Victory Medals (2/Lt. G. A. Shelley, R.A.F.), together with a 'G.V.R.' cap badge, good very fine (4)

George Alfred Shelley landed at Walker's Pier, Gallipoli on 8 October 1915, where his unit - 1/1st Norfolk Yeomanry - went into action in the Hill 60: owing to battle casualties and sickness, its strength had been reduced to 14 officers and 300 other ranks by late October.

In common with many yeomen, Shelley later served in the Machine Gun Corps, in his case in 209th Battalion, and he was similarly employed in the Middle East when he applied for a commission in the Royal Air Force. He undertook pilot training and, on qualifying in June 1918, was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant; sold with copied research.
