Albert G. Canning landed at Suvla, Gallipoli on 9 October 1915, where his unit - Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry - was attached to 2nd Mounted Division and saw action at Jephson's Post and elsewhere. Subsequently deployed in the defence of the Suez Canal, the unit was amalgamated to form the 16th (Royal 1st Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, in January 1917. Having then seen action in the Palestine operations 1917-18, the Battalion was embarked for France in May 1918.

Sold with a quantity of related badges, including Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry cap badge and metalled 'R. 1st D.Y' uniform badges (2), together with the recipient's National Safety First Association driving badges, in silver and bronze, both with assorted dated clasps for the 1940s.
