Thomas Henry Bird was born on in Lyttelton on 18 November 1918 and enlisted in the New Zealand Military Forces in January 1940. Drafted to the 23rd Battalion, he was embarked for the U.K. and thence, in March 1941, for Egypt. His battalion was subsequently allocated to the defence of Crete, where he was killed in action at Maleme on 20 May 1941. His mother claimed his New Zealand Memorial Cross in December 1947; sold with copied service record, including verification for the above campaign awards.
