Frank Davenport was born in Liverpool, Lancashire in April 1910 and entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in August 1928. His subsequent award of the L.S. & G.C. Medal was issued to him in H.M.S. Ambrose in August 1943. A depot ship to the 9th Submarine Flotilla at Dundee, Ambrose catered for all manner of gallant guests, from submariners and commandos to S.O.E. and Norwegian resistance operatives: a total of 296 sailors and commandos operating from the base were killed in action.
