Thomas Paton enlisted in the 1st Battalion, Seaforth Higlanders on 28 August 1906. Having then seen active service on the North West Frontier in 1908 (Medal & clasp), he arrived in France as a member of the 2nd Battalion on 23 August 1914 but he discharged on 11 March 1915; he was in receipt of the Silver War Badge.
