James Henry Montifort Beasley was born in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh in 1876 and was educated at Bedford School and the R.M.A. Woolwich. Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery in March 1896, he witnessed active service in the Boxer Rebellion and was advanced to Captain in September 1901 (Medal). During the Great War he served in the Anzac Corps, gaining the D.S.O. (London Gazette 4 June 1917, refers) and three 'mentions' (London Gazettes 4 January and 15 May 1915 and 14 December 1917, refer).
Military accolades aside, Beasley was a noted bridge player and became Co-founder and Chairman of two of the leading card clubs: Crockford's and the Hamilton Club. He died in 1949.
