James Henry Dobson was born at Holborn, London in April 1892 and entered in the Royal Navy in December 1909. During the Great War he served aboard H.M.S. Defence in September 1913-January 1915, which included her persuit of the Goeben and Breslau and their blockade in the Dardanelles; his wartime career also shows him as being confined to the cells for 10 days for gambling.
In the 1920s, Dobson served on the China Station in H.M.S. Bee and in West Africa in H.M.S. Thistle, the last Victorian gunboat of the Royal Navy with practicable sailing rig. His career was ended following severe injuries on 15 February 1932 whilst aboard H.M.S. Malaya, when he suffered a dislocated leg and both of his arms were broken; sold with copied service record.
