John Kenny afterwards served with the Royal Engineers during the Great War. He arrived in France on 11 February 1915 and was discharged on 10 February 1916. His copied MIC states 'Retd. (992.K.R.1923)', which, under the King's Regulation 992 of 1923, confirms that his Great War awards were never delivered to him: instead, they would have been 'broken up' after a period of 10 years.
