Gray Hardwell arrived in France as a Private in the 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders on 7 October 1914. A little over a fortnight later, on the 29th, he was killed in the Battle of Ypres, the same date on which a battalion officer, Lieutenant J. A. O. Brooke, won the V.C.: such was the fierce nature of the fighting that a single platoon counted 230 dead Germans in front of its positions.
