Ernest Thomas Cheffers was born at St. Goran, Cornwall in June 1868 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in April 1884. Advanced to Ordinary Seaman in June 1886, he served in the sloop H.M.S. Racer from April 1891 to September 1894, and was present in operations in West Africa (Medal & clasp); he was promoted to Able Seaman in the same period. Having then served in the Coast Guard from July 1899, he was pensioned ashore as a Commissioned Boatman in September 1908, when he enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve. He was briefly recalled in the Great War but was invalided ashore owing to ill-health in January 1915; sold with copied research, including confirmation of his entitlement to a single British War Medal 1914-20 and the Silver War Badge.
