(x) The Sutlej 1845-46 Medal awarded to Private H. Kershaw, 29th Regiment, who was wounded at the Battle of Sobraon, a day on which the Regiment suffered nearly 35% casualties
Sutlej 1845-46, for Ferozeshuhur, 1 clasp, Sobraon (Henry Kershaw 29th Regt.), claw tightened, edge bruising, nearly very fine
Henry Kershaw served as a Private in the 29th (Worcestershire) Regiment in the Sutlej and was wounded in action at the Battle of Sobraon on 10 February 1846. On that day the Regiment was heavily engaged and supported by two native battalions in dashing towards the enemy ramparts, which rose as high as 10ft in places. The attackers could see nothing but the muzzles of the guns behind which the enemy infantry were posted in entrenchments four deep. On their third gallant charge they broke through and reached the first Sikh trenches, inflicting devastating casualties. The 29th suffered casualties of 186 out of the 552 men present and had their Regimental Colour smashed by enemy fire.
