A scarce Telegraphic Cable Service Great War Service Badge
Badge, officially numbered '751' to the reverse, by Firmin & Sons, St. Martin's Lane, London, 30mm x 43mm, gilt, nearly extremely fine
The Telegraphic Cable Service Great War Service Badge was issued by the Eastern Telegraph Company to employees who remained on active cable duty. On occasion company workers came under enemy fire, a case in point being the German raider Emden's attack on Direction Island, November 1914.
The Badge was instituted in May 1915 as a mark of reward to employees who remained at their posts to ensure the efficient and crucial lines of communication through the Empire remained intact; sold with a copy of Telegraphic Cable Service Badge, World War I, by B. Burns, providing further detail and from which the above information has been taken.
