Germany, Hannover, Langensalza Medal 1866, bronze, the edge officially impressed 'E. Luttmann', contact marks, nearly very fine

The Battle of Langensalza was fought on 27 June 1866, with the forces of Hannover facing the Prussians. With nearly 30,000 men on the field, the larger force under King George V of Hannover won a tactical victory outnumbering the Prussians. However, following the Battle they found themselves encircled by a reinforced Prussian Army. Unable to combine forces with their Bavarian allies, they were forced to surrender only two days later, annexing Hannover and beginning the process of the unification of Germany.
