Volunteer Force Long Service, E.VII.R. (Capt. W. H. Pitten, 3/V.B. S. Wales Bdrs.), edge bruising, otherwise very fine

William Howell Pitten was appointed Quarter-Master of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, South Wales Borderers in July 1892.

On being advanced to Captain in March 1896, he was seconded as a Supply & Transport Officer to the South Wales Volunteer Infantry Brigade, afterwards titled the Welsh Divisional Transport & Supply Column in the newly established Territorial Army, but it was as part of the Volunteer Force that he was given the honorary rank of Major in January 1904.

Having resigned his commission in November 1913, Pitten was quickly re-employed on the outbreak of hostilities, being appointed Temporary Major in the 10th Battalion (1st Gwent), South Wales Borderers. Transferring to the 13th Battalion in July 1915, he relinquished his commission in May 1916, when he was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel; sold with copied research
