Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal (successful) (Florence A. Bott, 22nd May 1916), in its Elkington & Co. case of issue, good very fine
Florence Alice Bott was awarded the Bronze Medal for saving the life of a child at Badsey, near Evesham, Worcestershire, on 22 May 1916. The child had fallen into a well which was 18 feet deep with 11 feet of water in it. Florence jumped in and managed to get the child out (R.H.S. Case No. 42432, refers).
The full story of her gallant exploits is recounted in The Badsey & Aldington Community News, April 2013 (copy included). This states that the child - her two year old son - was trapped under the collapsed well covering, thereby making Florence's task more complicated. Remarkably, she scaled the inside of well by making use of the joints in the brickwork and, 'after a hard struggle', reached safety. She was subsequently recommended for her award by the Rev. Allsebrook, vicar of Badsey.
