Lionel Button was born at Erith, Kent in July 1896 and joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class in July 1918, direct from the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Enjoying steady advancement between the wars, he served as an E.R.A. 2nd Class in the submarine depot ship Titania on the China Station in the late 1920s and was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in September 1933. Having then served off Palestine in the late 1930s, he was advanced to C.E.R.A. on the eve of the renewal of hostilities. Among his subsequent wartime appointments, he joined the cruiser Sheffield in June 1942, followed by time in the minesweeping trawler Product: it was in the latter capacity that he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 14 June 1945, refers); sold with copied research.
