Charles Hugo Wilton was born in Kensington, London on 29 May 1881 and was commissioned in the temporary rank of Lieutenant in the 12th (Service) Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Brigade, in November 1914.
Appointed the Battalion's Machine-Gun Officer, he was embarked for France in July 1915 and quickly saw action at Laventie. Advanced to Captain at the year's end, he was given command of 'B' Company and saw much action on the Somme in the summer of 1916, when he served with distinction. He was twice mentioned in despatches (London Gazettes 15 June 1916 and 4 January 1917, refer).
In December 1916, Wilton transferred to the 3rd Nigeria Regiment in the West African Field Force. Relinquishing his commission in March 1919, he appears to have settled in the Far East, where he had business interests as a trader and planter.
Wilton was commissioned Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in July 1940, when he took up an appointment in the Administrative and General Duties Branch. Advanced to Flying Officer in July 1941, he transferred to the R.A.F. Regiment in early 1942 but returned to an appointment in the Administrative and General Duties Branch in May 1944; sold with a file of copied research.
