Frank Arthur Searle Hinton was originally commissioned in the 4th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, in June 1910, but transferred as a Lieutenant to the 6th (Glamorgan) Battalion, The Welsh Regiment, in March 1913.

It was in this capacity that he was embarked for France in late October 1914, where he was advanced to Captain in October 1915. He subsequently served with distinction on the Somme in July-November 1916, at one time as 2nd-in-command of the Battalion, and was twice mentioned in despatches (London Gazettes 15 June 1916 and 4 January 1917, refer).

Invalided home on account of ill-health at the end of 1916, Hinton was appointed Captain & Adjutant of the 1st (Volunteer) Battalion, Surrey Volunteer Rifles, in June 1917. Then in April 1922, having transferred to the 4th Battalion, The Queen's Regiment, he resigned his commission and was granted the rank of Major.

Re-employed on the renewal of hostilities in September 1939, he was given an emergency commission in the Royal Pioneer Corps and, in May 1940, was posted as a Lieutenant to the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps. Dubbed 'The King's Most Loyal Enemy Aliens', corps members largely comprised Austrian and German nationals who had fled the Nazi regime. Not a few of them went on to witness active service, including those recruited by S.O.E.

Post-war, Hinton served in the Oxford Army Cadet Corps, and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on his retirement in June 1951; sold with copied research.
