(x) East and West Africa 1887-1900, 2 clasps, Benin 1897, Sierra Leone 1898-99 (R. Dixon, A.B., H.M.S. Widgeon.), good very fine

Robert Craddock Dixon was born in Cornwall on 10 November 1875 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in April 1891.

He subsequently served as an Able Seaman in H.M.S. Widgeon from October 1896 until June 1897, in which period he was present in the Benin 1897 operations, gaining one of 75 clasps awarded to the ship. Removing to the Fox in early 1898, Dixon was also present in the Sierra Leone operations of 1898-99, and was awarded one of 87 clasps to the ship.

Advanced to Petty Officer 1st Class in November 1902, Dixon transferred to the Coast Guard in the following year, and was serving as a Leading Boatman at Mulroy in Co. Donegal on the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. Briefly recalled to the gunnery establishment Excellent, he otherwise served out the war in the Coast Guard, the final entry on his service record being dated in April 1919; he was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in March 1912; sold with copied service record and medal roll verification.
