Private James Llewellyn was born in 1851 and enlisted in the 1st Battalion, 24th Foot, at Cardiff, Glamorgan, on 4 July 1874. Embarked for South Africa, he witnessed active service from 1877 and was killed in action at the Battle of Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879. His effects - and Medal with '1877-8-9' clasp - were claimed by his father.
