William Wilberforce
1799 (1 August) long folio A.L.S. from Broomfield (London) to John Blackbourne, "You do me far more than justice in the kind things you say of me – what you see in me, is in truth the reflection from yourself. This is no unusual case, & it reminds me of a story we had current among us in my younger days of Fox’s reporting how entertaining Thurlow had been at White’s one night where he had been kept till morning by Thurlow’s wit & vivacity, who on hearing of it, solemnly declared that he had himself scarce said a word, or indeed had the opportunity of so doing, Fox himself having poured forth one unintermitted stream of good-memoried pleasantry. – I am well aware that you who live in the midst of your own County must have multiplied claims on you growing out of that circumstance, & indeed rendering any aid you render there, not an individual act merely, but often the means of calling forth the beneficence of others ..." and is signed "W Wilberforce".
