Early Letters and Handstamps
1849 (26 May) much-travelled envelope from Kinsale to Auckland marked "To remain at the Post Office till called for" and "To be forwarded via Southampton per the Sydney mail of the 31st. May 1849", upon arrival in New Zealand with manuscript "P.O. Otago 11 Sept 49" and subsequently redirected to New Plymouth and again to Nelson, showing datestamps of London, London Ship Letter, Auckland (22.12), Petre (12.1), Wellington (18.1) and Nelson (31.10 and with manuscript "Advertised and not Claimed" at left, remarkably no markings on reverse; one side flap missing and a few other small imperfections though a remarkable item, full of character and taking some 17 months to deliver. Used during the first year of the manuscript P.O. Otago period. Photo
