1872 (23 Feb.) envelope from Motueka "via Brindisi" to Darlington, bearing 1864-71 2d. blue Plate I worn plate (2) and 6d. red-brown with indistinct numeral cancellations and with despatch c.d.s. alongside, the reverse with Dunedin c.d.s. for 3 April suggesting the cover was misplaced at Nelson for some seven weeks, Darlington (10.6) and Croft (11.6) c.d.s. Note: Due to increased charges to transit Belgium, the via Brindisi rate was increased to 10d. on 6 September 1871, However, on 20 February 1872, a G.P.O. notice advised that in future mail via Brindisi would be carried through the newly opened Mont Cenis Tunnel and across France to Calais, see Ellott page 120 and illustrated there
