1874 (29 June) envelope ex the "Bailey" correspondence registered to Wolverhampton, bearing 4d. carmine and 6d. blue-green (some perfs cut off at top) centrally cancelled by undated "lagos/b" c.d.s., showing "lagos/a" c.d.s. below, red crayon "5" over "2/7", straight-line "registered letter" h.s. and "paid/liverpool/br. packet/5a" c.d.s. (28.7) and "registered/liverpool" double-ring d.s., both in red, with arrival datestamp (29.7) on reverse. The only recorded example on cover. Photo
Note: It is believed that following the introduction of adhesive stamps, for a short period, a dateless canceller was used as a security measure when letters were handed in, the normal one being applied later when the mail was made up for the mailboat.
