1853 (17 Nov.) envelope addressed to "Captain Bird, Commandant at Fort James, Accra", with letter headed "Penelope, Cape Coast" from a furious (and presumably rather wet) Rear Admiral Bruce, complaining bitterly that the local canoemen "deserve to have their grog Stopped, for they wantonly took us through the worst of the surf, for reasons best known to themselves" whilst ferrying him to shore from his ship "Penelope". Fascinating early correspondence.
